Continuing Education Classes

Powerful curriculum, growth, and community, setting you up for success in your career as a massage therapist

Massage Academy Continuing Education

Massage therapy is not a skill that a person spends six months learning and then practices exactly the same way day-in, day-out for the remainder of their career. Rather, it is a set of skills and experiences that evolves over time as a therapist learns and integrates into their craft new techniques and treatment philosophies that resonate with who they wish to be as a therapist, often informed by a specific population of clients they intend to help or by their own healing journey.
Ke Kino’s aim as a continuing education provider is to offer high-quality, carefully selected continuing education courses to our local, regional, and national community of therapists. The selection of continuing education courses Ke Kino offers is based not only therapists’ feedback and what they tell us they are looking for, but also on an ethic to provide the highest caliber instructors and curriculum that we can.

2021 Ongoing Courses

Equine (56 hours)

Many recreational and professional horse owners use massage therapy as a natural, non-invasive, gentle approach to horse care. Just like in human athletes, massage increases mobility, the efficiency of movement, increases performance, circulation, and quickens recovery from injury. It also helps to calm a stressed horse and build trust.

For therapists, learning Equine Massage is an opportunity to widen or add a specialization to an existing client base, to transition into a branch of our industry that makes it possible to work many places around the world, and for those who don’t ever plan on working with horses, an opportunity to learn and practice valuable non-verbal listening and communication skills that are transferable to any species of the client.

In this class, we will cover the anatomy and conformation of the horse, massage strokes and hoof care, and the assessment and observation of the horse, its stall, and its environment. We will also review contraindications to horse massage and examine the relevance and importance of the horse’s attitude towards the therapist.

Wear boots or closed-toed shoes for the barn.

Intro to MET: Muscle Energy Techniques

Exclusive to Ke Kino, this course is 80% hands-on, and is intended for therapists who want to help their clients through the use of carefully engineered releases, stretches, and activation techniques. This course is also beneficial to therapists in that much of the effort put forth to perform these techniques comes from the client, not the therapist, meaning that the therapist’s physical effort is minimal.

This class follows a lineage of osteopathic Muscle Energy Techniques (MET), adding the component of neurological releases as they relate to muscular and fascial systems.

Intro to MET is a prerequisite to Ke Kino’s advanced MET classes.

  • Integrative MET for Sports and Elite Athletes
  • MET for the Upper Spine
  • MET for the Lower Spine

Both Intro to MET and Integrative MET for Sports and Elite Athletes courses are REQUIRED for therapists wishing to join Ke Kino’s growing team that works with professional athletes in the Dallas area.

Usui Reiki Level 1 (Non-CE)

In this class you will learn the authentic Usui Reiki system, plus ancient Tibetan wisdom teachings from which Mikao Usui, a Japanese scholar, was inspired when he discovered Reiki in the 1920’s. Reiki (pronounced “ray-key”), is a healing modality that energetically recharges both the giver and receiver without using physical pressure, allowing it to be seamlessly introduced into other healing practices to increase potency and breadth of therapy by addressing all physical, emotional, mental, spiritual level simultaneously. The Reiki energy flows through the hands of the trained practitioner and into the person, animal or plant being treated, enhancing and accelerating the natural healing processes in the body. Through well-organized lectures, clear and thorough Reiki demonstrations, you will gain the knowledge, confidence and certification to give Reiki to yourself and others.  Reiki is not just a healing modality but also a foundation for accelerated spiritual growth. This tradition includes an “Attunement,” a series of 4 energy initiations, through which a Master Teacher imparts focused life force to a student to quicken their progress and the ascent of kundalini energy up the spine, bypassing years of yoga and meditation that would be required to gain the same refinement of the nervous system and brain.

In this Reiki 1 Training you will learn:

• How to confidently deliver effective Reiki treatments for yourself, family, friends, and pets.
• How to bring healing comfort to any condition, whether acute or chronic on all PEMS levels (physical, emotional, mental, and spiritual).
• How to use Reiki to improve immune function.
• How to use Reiki to reduce and eliminate stress, tension and pain.
• How to treat recent injuries via a 2-step Reiki protocol. Using this protocol, injuries can heal in 1/3 of the normal time.
• How to use Reiki to prepare someone for surgery (prepare their mind and body to avoid internalizing the trauma, in order to heal faster.)
• How to customize each Reiki treatment to fit anyone’s (human or animal) needs.
• How to scan the human energy field and chakras (energy centers) for balance and vitality and use this information during the Reiki treatment.
• The relationship between chakras and emotions and how these affect the body.
• How to charge and cleanse crystals with Reiki and use them for balancing the chakras.
• How to give Reiki to yourself. (We’ll help you design a Reiki self-treatment protocol just for you.)
• How to give a Reiki treatment to someone who is sitting in a chair (not everyone may be able to lie down comfortably).
• How to give Reiki treatments to pets, e.g., dogs, cats and horses as well as to plants in your garden. This class includes Animal Reiki Level 1.
• The history of Reiki with stories about Mikao Usui, Chujiro Hayashi, Hawayo Takata.
